The new Bismarck Public Schools Career Academy is a great facility and a huge improvement over the old Tech Center. The Graphic Design and Communications Department has a great space – it’s large and well equipped.

The big space has been a little flat – big expanses of taupe walls with nothing on them.

To improve the space and allow students to make their mark, the GDC instructors designed an assignment that would allow every student to be involved in creating art for the department.

Each student was assigned a space. All of the sophomore spaces were the same size, while the freshman pieces varied. Students randomly chose a topic or method. Some students were only allowed to use type in their illustration, others had to focus on incorporating the GDC logo. There were 17 possibilities. The students followed the creative process, starting with thumbnails and ending with a final piece. The GDC instructors hung the pieces in the hallway outside the classrooms.

A trip to the capitol

The Freshmen Graphic Design and Communications students spent a day at the North Dakota Capitol Building. They weren’t lobbying the legislature, instead it was part of a photo assignment.

Because of the size of the building, it’s a perfect place to do a group assignment. All of the students see the same building, but everyone manages to capture different images of it. The building also makes it possible for students to ask questions and work directly with the instructor.
